We should ask for more from AI than to automate labor or cure disease or generate infinite content, or even solve physics. The ultimate goal of the AI project should be for us to understand ourselves fully, down to the roots of consciousness, suffering, joy, meaning… and then modify that structure as needed to escape the worsts of Darwinian evolution, which is totally agnostic about sentient lives' inner worlds. Gratuitous suffering of any being is not necessary and it should be possible to get rid of it without erasing joy or meaning and everything that makes life wonderful.
